Another one from the archives, in honor of several wonderful friends and anyone else currently wading through the sticky, often painful muck of transition.
There is a saying I love in Spanish, “Dale tiempo al tiempo” (give time to time). It’s about letting things move at their own pace, being patient, trusting the process. But I like the idea it evokes that even time needs time to do what it does: heal.
So, I hope this serves as a helpful reminder today:
This Too Shall Pass (A Poem)
When I am dust beneath the earth I will not care how many times you said the wrong thing It will not matter that I leapt over every obstacle in my path It will not matter that you broke me and I broke you right back This? This too shall pass. The flash of a hummingbird’s wings The gasp of a perfect orgasm The melting of the horizon at dawn The sharp strike of every tiny heartbreak …none of it no, none of it was made to last When I am nothing but wispy memories howling in the dark I will wish I could go back to comfort the little girl lost in the woods: Hush now, stand up, this too shall pass” When I am ash In the fires I myself set my spirit will rise again in another time and she will forget — she will care too much about the small things She will cry too long And struggle to overcome everything blocking her path And I will not be able to help her She will have to start at the beginning find the message cast by her own bones: This — yes, this — this too shall pass.
